Rising Star Caitlin Tootell Set to Shine at Flemington

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – Apprentice jockey Caitlin Tootell is making waves in South Australia, and this Sunday, she’ll take her talents to the prestigious Flemington Racecourse for the first time. The 25-year-old, who has been turning heads with her natural flair, will ride in front of a packed crowd, marking a pivotal moment in her budding career. Her debut comes just days away, with racing enthusiasts already buzzing about her potential.

Tootell’s journey to the track has been anything but ordinary. Growing up with a father, David, who enjoyed a successful stint as a jockey, she was barred from riding until 16 due to family rules. Her decade-long gymnastics background, particularly on the balance beam, has given her a strong foundation, while her apprenticeship under Adelaide Cup winner Shayne Cahill has honed her skills. “It’s been a long time coming, and I’m so keen to get going,” she said recently.

The Flemington challenge is no small feat. Known for its gruelling 2,250-metre circuit and uphill finish, the track tests even seasoned riders. With only about 10% of apprentice jockeys succeeding on their first major outing at Flemington, according to Victoria Racing Club stats, Tootell faces a tough task. Yet, her rise reflects a broader shift, with women now holding 15% of jockey licenses in Australia—up from 5% a decade ago—thanks to better training and gender equity efforts.

Supporters, including Cahill, are optimistic. “Caitlin’s lucky to be in this environment, and I’ve been able to help her a lot,” he noted, praising her attitude and potential. As she prepares to race, possibly on Two Odd Sox at Strathalbyn, all eyes will be on whether this young talent can break the mould and make history at one of Australia’s iconic racing venues. Stay tuned for what promises to be an exciting debut!
